The creation of gas supply and infrastructure for the expansion of the gas grid in Russian regions for housing, utilities, and industries is a strategic activity for Gazprom. The 2016-2020 expansion programme that is nearing completion will have built nearly 10,000 Km of pipelines supplying gas to over 1,000 localities, raising the gas penetration rate from 66.2% to 71.4%, and with the gas grid growth being 2.6 times higher in rural areas than in towns and cities. The 2021-25 programme will be signed with 67 regions with 24,400 Km of gas pipelines being built to supply 3,632 localities. The gas penetration rate is expected to rise to 74.7% in January 2026.
