Oil Economy Focus Rapid Review

Stringent new rules on marine sulphur emissions will come into force in January 2020 and many ship-owners are assessing how to comply. The options are: scrap older tonnage, fit sulphur scrubbers, switch to low-sulphur marine gasoil or install power plants capable of burning LNG. A carbon-neutral maritime industry makes LNG attractive, but not many ships trading today can burn LNG – mostly cruise ships, passenger carriers and LNG tankers using boil-off gas for their auxiliary engines. The big question is whether ship owners will order enough vessels, and whether there will be enough LNG to cope with demand if they do.
