Oil Economy Focus Rapid Review

Argentina has opened bidding for 38 offshore blocks. The main driver of interest is that Argentina’s vast offshore region is “practically the last frontier” for offshore exploration. Africa and Brazil’s offshore has been largely explored in the Atlantic, and discoveries have been made recently off the coasts of Guyana and Suriname, while Uruguay has been tested, leaving Argentina as the last big spot for exploration. The blocks are in three basins in the South Atlantic: Argentina Norte, Austral and Malvinas Oeste, water depths running from 100-4,000 meters. Most of the interest is in the continental slope which would be a similar geology to offshore Guyana and Suriname.
